We’re delighted to announce that after several years of efforts by many dedicated individuals, our latest appeal for our charitable status was successful! As of April 19, 2024, Vegan Society Canada is now officially recognized as a charitable organization.
Securing this status required considerably more time and effort than we anticipated. It would be counterproductive to recount every step over the years, especially since the landscape has changed significantly in that time. But for those interested in more details, our yearly updates provide a thorough overview of this journey.
Throughout the years, we’ve discussed various potential outcomes with our supporters and their implications. Now, we can clarify what this decision means: 1) it is a reversal of Revenue Canada’s initial denial of our registration, and 2) since we amended the wording of our charitable purposes during the process, unfortunately, only donations received from June 5th 2024 through our donation platforms will be eligible for a tax receipt. This change will also likely lead to other adjustments as we optimize our processes.
We’re happy to report that we now support two donation platforms. PayPal is the preferred method; please use it whenever possible as it incurs no fees. (CanadaHelps is also available if needed). Keep in mind that all old internal rules remain intact, so please contact us for gifts above $10,000; we will continue to decline donations that conflict with our vision of veganism, mission, or charitable purposes.
We want to express our gratitude to Revenue Canada and especially the tax appeal specialists who handled our latest appeal. If we had needed to go to court, it would have added years to the process and required substantial resources which could be better served promoting our charitable purposes. We are thankful that this process has concluded, allowing us to focus our resources on fulfilling these purposes instead of defending them.
